Destiny Clarke

Our ten-year anniversary was approaching and we decided to renew our vows. This time I took control and put my foot down, I didn't want his family there, especially his old gorilla looking mother. I planned to have a small ceremony with my mom, my best friend and few of my coworkers. Then we planned to take a two-week cruise to the Caribbean. I was looking forward to taking a well-deserved vacation.

It was my night to work; God knows I was getting tired of working the night shift. I've been saying for years that I was going to the day shift. I was tired, and I wanted to be in my bed at night with my husband like every other woman. I was about to go on my lunch break at 1:00 a.m, when my phone started to ring; I looked at the caller ID and it was an unknown caller. I picked it up.

“Hello.” No one answered.

“Hello,” I said again, this time with an attitude.

There was still no answer. I quickly hung up my phone.

“Everything alright?” one of the nurses asked me.

“Yes, I guess; somebody called my phone and just sat on the line.”

“Somebody got a secret crush, maybe he got cold feet,” she joked.

“Yeah right, I only have eyes for the wonderful Mr. Clarke…” before I could finish my sentence, the phone rang again from the same unknown number. I picked up again, and still no answer; it continued ringing back to back until I finally got fed up and cut the phone off. This was some strange shit, because I had no idea who would be playing on my damn phone this time of night.

Soon as I got home, I went to confront Hassan. I wanted to know if he gave anyone my phone number. He denied doing such a thing and told me to change my number. The harassing calls continued for days. Whoever it was would just sit on the phone, breathing. The calls got so bad; I would have to cut off my phone while I was at work.

I couldn’t take it anymore; one morning after work, I drove to the Sprint shop and got my number changed. I only gave my new number to my Mama, Hassan, Amaiya’s school and my girlfriend.

Speaking of girlfriend, it’s been a minute since she and I chilled out. She and I were best friends, but because of our hectic lives, we barely have time to chop it up, like we used to. I haven’t seen her in over a year, which was bad.

“Hello.”

“Hey stranger, how you been?”

“I’m good, trying to work and take care of business.”

“I hear you chica, are you still at the hospital?”

“Girl yes, you know that's my second home. It ain't been the same since you left though.”

“I prefer Lady of Mercy Hospital. Westchester Medical was working us too damn hard. I couldn't take it no more, and that damn head nurse was a bitch.”

“Child yes, she is on day shift now. We have a new head nurse, she don’t be trippin’ like that.
